Retro Retr0bright the GameCube – Reversing years of photodegradation

My personal GameCube when I was a kid saw many years of service. It sat next to my CRT TV near a window and over the years the face plate inevitably went from a clean white, so a piss yellow. For those unfamiliar with electronics with ABS plastics from the 80s to the early 2000s, manufactures often mixed bromine in to act as a flame retardant. Bromine is unfortunately prone to photodegradation – making it turn yellow when exposed to outdoor UV light. Luckily this proses can be reversed with a simple chemical mixture known as Retr0bright!

A mixture of 12% Hydrogen peroxide solution and a bit of tetraacetylethylenediamine (TAED) which can be found in Tide powder laundry detergent. Xanthan gum or arrowroot can be added to the mixture to make if more of a paste if you don’t want to submerge the part. Finally you will need UV light. Personally I put everything in a sealed clear plastic tub and hang a UV light over top. Within a few hours my GameCube’s face plate was back to it original glory.
